Carl Barger
On July 8, 1991, Carl Barger, President of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1987, was hired as the Marlins first President. Just over one year later, on December 9, 1992, Barger collapsed during a session at the baseball winter meetings in Louisville, KY. He passed away few hours later in the Humana University Hospital. The following February, the Marlins dedicated their Brevard County training complex, when team owner Wayne Huizenga announced the complex would be named the Carl F. Barger Complex at Viera.
