JUPITER, Fla. -- It didn't take long for Cameron Maybin to showcase his vast skills.

Batting second in an intrasquad game on Monday afternoon, the 20-year-old laced an RBI double into the gap in left center. He ended up scoring on Lee Mitchell's double in the first inning off Chris Volstad.

Maybin added a single, and finished with two hits in four at-bats.

One of the top prospects in the game, Maybin was a centerpiece in December's blockbuster trade with the Tigers. Florida sent Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to Detroit for Maybin, left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three pitching prospects.

After days of hitting in controlled situations, the Marlins went on the main Roger Dean Stadium field on Monday for a scrimmage. In the scrimmage, pitchers only threw fastballs and changeups, although the hitters weren't aware of that when the game started.

Maybin, the 10th overall pick in 2005 by Detroit, is competing for the starting center field spot. The organization is giving him every chance to win the job.

If the team feels he needs more development time, he would open the year in the Minor Leagues, and the club would go with either Cody Ross, Alejandro De Aza or Alfredo Amezaga. Brett Carroll and Jai Miller also are getting looks this spring.

As an organization, the Marlins note that Maybin was obtained to be their starting center fielder. It's just a matter of when he convinces the club that he is ready.

What he showed on Monday is he has terrific all-around skills. He can run, hit for power, and play solid defense.

"The main thing is the athleticism and the bat speed," hitting coach Jim Presley said when asked what jumped out at him about Maybin. "He's a baseball player. He really is. I don't get too excited about intrasquad games, but those were two balls that were hit pretty good."

The fact that Maybin was batting in the second spot also is interesting. Leading off was Alex Gomez and Lee Mitchell batted third in the scrimmage.

With his speed and strength, Maybin has the capability of leading off or batting third.

One scenario manager Fredi Gonzalez may consider is hitting Maybin second. If he does, he could find himself sandwiched between Hanley Ramirez and Jeremy Hermida.

The past two years, Dan Uggla has mostly hit second, but after a 31-homer season, he could be dropped to the middle of the order.

Lineup for Hurricanes: In Tuesday's exhibition against the University of Miami, the starters are expected to get two at-bats. That, of course, is subject to change by manager Fredi Gonzalez.

The Marlins traditionally take on the Hurricanes before they open their Grapefruit League schedule.

Bobby Keppel will be the starting pitcher.

The projected lineup will feature shortstop Ramirez, second baseman Uggla, first baseman Mike Jacobs, third baseman Jose Castillo, Rabelo, left fielder Josh Willingham, center fielder Cody Ross and right fielder Jeremy Hermida. Luis Gonzalez will be the designated hitter.

Upcoming rotation: The Grapefruit League rotation is starting to shape up.

Scott Olsen, believed to have the inside edge to be the Opening Day starter on March 31, will take the mound first. The left-hander takes the hill on Wednesday in a 7:05 p.m. ET start against the Nationals in Jupiter.

Gaby Hernandez, who is competing for a rotation spot, will also pitch on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Marlins travel to Fort Lauderdale to take on the Orioles. Sergio Mitre will start, while lefty Andrew Miller also will pitch. Miller is projected to be one of the top three starters.

On Friday, Florida has a split squad set up, with a 1:05 p.m. game with the Orioles at Roger Dean Stadium, and a 1:05 p.m. contest with the Nationals in Viera. Mark Hendrickson will face Baltimore. Rick VandenHurk will relieve Hendrickson.

In the road game at Viera, Ricky Nolasco will start against the Nats, with Volstad also slated that day.

On Saturday, the Marlins are the home team against the Cardinals. Dallas Trahern is scheduled to start.

Signings: Four more Marlins signed on Monday. Since all are under club control, their contracts were a formality.

The team inked pitchers Harvey Garcia, Logan Kensing, Henry Owens and Carroll, who can play all three outfield spots.

Coming up: The Marlins open their exhibition season on Tuesday with a 3:05 p.m. game against the University of Miami at Roger Dean Stadium. Keppel will get the start.
