MIAMI -- Another significant free agency deadline is approaching, and the Marlins have some decisions to make.

On Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET, all teams must decide if they are going to offer arbitration to their Type A and Type B free agents. By doing so, they would be eligible to receive either a compensatory Draft pick or picks should the player sign elsewhere.

The Marlins have three Type B free agents -- outfielder Luis Gonzalez, catcher Paul Lo Duca and lefty reliever Arthur Rhodes.

Indications are the Marlins will not offer arbitration to any of these three, but that is certainly subject to change.

Rhodes could be someone the Marlins consider bringing back, but the left-hander already is drawing interest from at least nine clubs, including the Cardinals.

Veteran pitcher Mark Hendrickson also filed for free agency, but the left-hander hasn't qualified as either a Type A or Type B player. So the Marlins would not receive any compensation if Hendrickson signs with another club.

Compensation for a Type A free agent is a first-round pick (unless it is lower than 15th overall) and a sandwich selection between the first and second rounds.

For lost Type B free agents, teams will receive a sandwich pick after the first round.

Even if the Marlins don't offer arbitration to their free agents, they can still continue negotiating with the players.

Rhodes, 39, enjoyed a strong 2008. The left-hander was acquired July 31 from Seattle for pitching prospect Gaby Hernandez.

In 25 games with the Marlins, Rhodes was 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA. He struck out 14 in 13 1/3 innings, seeing most of his action against left-handed hitters.

The Marlins are looking at some in-house candidates as left-handed relievers. But they lack the experience of Rhodes.

Hot Stove

Prospect Aaron Thompson, a first-round pick in 2005, was used as a reliever in the Arizona Fall League. He will get a chance to make the club in Spring Training working out of the bullpen. Taylor Tankersley and Renyel Pinto are other lefties in the organization who have Major League service time.

Gonzalez, 41, offered veteran leadership on a youthful squad this past season. He started in right field on Opening Day because Jeremy Hermida was on the disabled list. It was the 18th straight season Gonzalez has started in the big leagues.

In all likelihood, Gonzalez will sign with another club. He is even considering joining an American League squad where he could be used as a designated hitter.

Lo Duca, 36, played in 21 games with the Marlins after he signed a Minor League deal on Aug. 9. The veteran batted .294 in 34 at-bats as John Baker's backup.

Hendrickson, the Opening Day starter in 2008, made 19 starts for the Marlins in the first half. But he was switched to the bullpen in July.
