Marlins at the plate: Hanley Ramirez cranked a two-run homer that briefly put Florida ahead, and also drew a walk. Jay Gibbons picked up an RBI single off the bench, and Brett Carroll hit a two-run single that tied the game in a three-run eighth.
Cardinals at the plate: National League Most Valuable Player Albert Pujols reached base three times, drawing two walks and stroking a single. Rick Ankiel singled, doubled to deep center and drove in two runs. Skip Schumaker singled twice, stole a base and scored two runs.
Marlins on the mound: Anibal Sanchez had shaky control but minimized the damage in his two-inning start. Sanchez allowed three hits and three walks, but only one unearned run. Aaron Thompson, Brett Sinkbeil and Tim Wood each turned in a shutout inning, while Chris Leroux scuffled in a two-run, two-walk inning.
Cardinals on the mound: Starter Blake Hawksworth bounced back from a shaky beginning to turn in a very nice effort. Hawksworth went 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing three hits and a walk and striking out two. Royce Ring impressed in his St. Louis debut, retiring all four batters he faced and striking out two while going against the heart of the Florida order. Francisco Samuel allowed two runs and three walks in 1 2/3 innings.
